In the early 16th century it began to be frequently associated with Italia turrita , the national personification of the Italian peninsula.

The Stella d'Italia was adopted as part of the emblem of Italy in , where it is superimposed on a steel cogwheel , all surrounded by an oak branch and an olive branch.

From an allegorical point of view, the Star of Italy metaphorically represents the shining destiny of Italy.

The Italian Star is also recalled by some honors. The Italian Star is recalled by the Colonial Order of the Star of Italy , decoration of the Kingdom of Italy which was intended to celebrate the Italian Empire , as well as by the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity , the first decoration established by Republican Italy , which was replaced in by the Order of the Star of Italy, second civil honorary title in importance of the Italian State.

The Star of Italy is also recalled by the stars worn on the collars of Italian military uniforms and appears on the figurehead of the Italian Navy.

In the civil sphere, the Italian Star is the central symbol of the emblem of the Club Alpino Italiano. The symbolism that sees a star associated with Italy was born in ancient Greece , and this is why it is the oldest national symbol of Italy [2] and originated from the combination of Venus , as an evening star, with the West [7] and therefore with the Italian peninsula, one of which denominations it was Esperia , or "land of Hesperus, the star of the Evening consecrated to Venus".

The story of Aeneas' journey to the Italian coast from the maternal star of Venus is then resumed in Roman times by Pliny the Elder , by Marcus Terentius Varro and by Virgil , giving rise to a double tradition: the political tradition of Caesaris Astrum , the star of Julius Caesar which originated from the appearance of a comet star shortly after his death and which was also recalled by Augustus as an auspicious sign and as a prefiguration of the Pax Romana , [9] and the toponymy and literary tradition of Greek origin of Italy called Esperia , the "land on which the evening star sets", that is Venus.

The merger of the two traditions associated the star with Italy, the center of the Roman Empire and never considered a province, having a special administrative status, being divided into the Augustan regions.

The first association between the star the Stella Veneris and the mural crown the Corona muralis of Italia turrita , from which the so-called Italia turrita e stellata , is also from the Roman era and dates back to the time of Augustus.

After the disappearance due to the fall of the Western Roman Empire and the oblivion of the Middle Ages , the Star of Italy was rediscovered in the Renaissance.

However it is also probable that the star referred to Sirius , under whose beneficial influence Cangrande would be born, with the green, white and red colors associated with the three theological virtues.

In , in the second edition of his treatise Iconologia , Cesare Ripa associated the symbol with the Italia turrita , and creates a modern version of Italy's allegorical personification: woman with a star on top of a towered crown, therefore supplied with the Corona muralis and the Stella Veneris.

The allegorical image of the towered and star-topped Italy became popular during the unification of Italy , spreading through a large iconography of statues, friezes and decorative objects, tourist-guide covers, postcards, prints and magazines' illustrations.

After the unification of Italy, the presence of enormous symbolic stars on the honor stage of the official ceremonies in which King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy participated led the Italians more and more to define it, in an affective way, as the "star" that protects the Italy.

In , thanks to the royal decree n. The Stella d'Italia is also mentioned in the patriotic music piece Tripoli bel suol d'amore , which was written in just before the start of the Italo-Turkish War , a military campaign forming part of the Italian colonial wars , to propagate the imminent war of the Kingdom of Italy against the Ottoman Empire , which was aimed at the conquest of Libya.

The Stella d'Italia was one of the symbols of the journey by train on the Aquileia - Rome line towards the capital of Italy of the body of the Italian Unknown Soldier.

The protective or providential meaning of the star was then taken up by Italian Fascism and the Italian resistance movement , which placed it on the flag of the National Liberation Committee , as well as by the republicans and the monarchists on the occasion of the institutional referendum of 2 June , which took place according to World War II ended.

Okay, I can't really define why I'm giving this book five stars, but no matter! I just felt a connection to Stella and Sam and their day at the seashore.

Aside from all the fun of exploring the seashore love the passage where Stella explains to Sam that starfish are stars that fell in love with the sea!

The big sister in me could totally go back twenty-odd years and empathize with Stella--yet I could also empathi Okay, I can't really define why I'm giving this book five stars, but no matter!

The big sister in me could totally go back twenty-odd years and empathize with Stella--yet I could also empathize with Sam!

You see, Stella has been to the seashore once, before Sam was born, but this is Sam's first time. So, of course, he thinks Stella knows everything about the sea So, he spends most of the day asking Stella question after question about the water, the fish, the shells, everything!

At first, it really is so very much fun to be the big sister--to have "been there and done that" and share all one's ginormous wealth of knowledge even if some is slightly, um, made up!

Yet, after awhile, the constant barrage of questioning does get a bit tiresome I admire that Stella never really pressures Sam or makes fun of him--just tries to be a good sister and friend to him and encourage Anyway, this was just a really sweet story!

The first in a series of picture-books detailing the adventures of siblings Stella and Sam, Stella, Star of the Sea follows the two children as they spend a day at the shore.

Lively, enthusiastic Stella is anxious to introduce her little brother to the wonders of the sea, but timid Sam finds it all rather overwhelming.

It's so big, and so noisy! His seemingly endless series of questions - "Are there any sea monsters? Where do starfish come from? An engaging brother-sister tale, enhanced by charming watercolor illustrations, this lovely little book is also an exuberant tribute to the delights of a summer day at the beach.

Gay's palette is bright, but never garish, and her figures have a cartoon-like oddness very thin legs, and rather "blobby" torsos that is somehow quite endearing.

I can't say that I enjoyed Stella, Star of the Sea quite as much as some of my friends, but I can definitely see the appeal, and plan to look for other titles in this series, when the opportunity presents itself.

This is a colorful, vibrantly illustrated book about a brother and sister and their trip to the beach. Older sister Stella has been to the ocean before, but her younger brother, Sam, never has.

Sam is constantly asking Stella "why, what and how. Kids should delight at the vivid illustrations and will probably relate well to a kid who asks a lot of questions.

My only c This is a colorful, vibrantly illustrated book about a brother and sister and their trip to the beach.

My only complaints are that: I felt the reason Sam didn't want to initially go in the water wasn't exactly explained. Was he afraid of the water?

Did he need his questions answered to be unafraid? Was he too curious about other stuff? And also, I felt sometimes the text didn't match the illustrations - like the text was placed one picture too early or too late.

These are pretty nit-picky things though, and really the book is charming! And I love the brother sister relationship - that is truly special!

Stella, his big sister, answers them all and then asks "Sam!! Are you ever coming in? I love the part when she explains that starfish fall from the sky and they aren't afraid of the sea because they have learned how to swim.

Genre: contemporary realistic fiction Reading level: Grades K-2 Such a cute and innocent story!! The poor boy Sam seems afraid to go into the ocean which many kids may be.

This story is a great read for kids who may have these fears, to let them know that it is okay to be afraid of something, but you cannot let your fear dictate your life.

Sam finally realizes that and I believe if kids read this, they will too!! Nov 24, Connie rated it really liked it. Stella and her brother Sam are visiting the sea.

It's his first time, and he has a lot of questions, like so many children we know. Now, Stella seems to live in a genre I like to call "Children don't need parents".

There are no parents in this book - and if you look closely, the only other people we see and we don't see many of them, it's a very uncrowded beach are children as well.

Don't overthink it, it'll only give you a headache and you won't be able to enjoy the book. So the task of answ Stella and her brother Sam are visiting the sea.

So the task of answering Sam's questions falls to her. And so she does answer them, with amazing patience, however fancifully.

I particularly liked reading that starfish are shooting stars that fell in love with the sea.

Without telling us explicitly, without making a big deal of it, we can see the huge difference in Sam's caution and curiosity with Stella's quite literal dive-right-in attitude.

It makes them come alive as real-real people, and it's hard to do that in a short picture book. Apparently there's a whole series of these books.

I have every intention of getting more of them. Sep 30, Alex Schuler rated it really liked it. Stella; Star of the Sea is the story of Stella and her little brother Sam and their day at the beach.

It's a very cute little story with beautiful, intricate artwork. Sam is Stella's little brother, and he is hesitant to go swimming in the ocean.

First, he has a lot of questions. Stella tells him they come "from the sky[ This is one of the best lines I've ever found in a children's picture boo Stella; Star of the Sea is the story of Stella and her little brother Sam and their day at the beach.

This is one of the best lines I've ever found in a children's picture book. The rest of the story is similarly playful and dreamy, and the watercolor artwork matches this mood.

The art looks a bit like a collage, with intricate patterns painted into the sea shells and the sails on the sailboats.

The calming shades of blue and green create a sense of ease which contrasts with Sam's hesitance to go in the ocean.

I really love that Marie-Louise Gay chose to do the art in watercolor, because it makes the ocean seem more realistic.
